Historical Designs
Historical Gardens are divided into two categories:

Restoration - The process of carefully recreating a pre-existing landscape. Information may come from excavation, photos, drawings, diaries, and letters.

Original Design – Creating a new design for a period house based on the architecture of the home, designs, and plant material that are historically correct for the home and site.

Historical Accuracy
Example Projects:

The accuracy of the design is based on:

Plants – We use catalogues dating back to 1827 and a variety of other source material to ensure the accuracy of plant material. The client can decide whether to use species specific plant lists or variety specific plant lists. It would be the difference between using any Rose or only using types that were available during the specific time period.

Layout – There are numerous plans, drawings, and art work to give us an accurate view of landscape design through history. When dealing with restoration, the layout will be based on source material relating to the site. Regardless, the design still has to make sense, and has to be functional for the client.
